This advanced course is home-study based, and includes some practically-based observations and research. The course is intended to deepen existing knowledge, while also examining new areas such as emotionality, the brain and behaviour and a multitude of case histories!
What you will learn:
Unit One: Rank Structure Revisited. Are domestic dogs really wolf-like? A new look at the role of pack leader and the behaviour of the pet dog with emphasis on emotionality, cognition and domestic evolution.
Unit Two: Early learning – lessons for life. Behavioural development, weaning and socialisation.
Unit Three: Practical applications of learning theory and training. Understanding signals of reward and non-reward. Clicker training and the anchoring of emotion. Creating creativity and training for specialist areas.
Unit Four: The behavioural effects of food, fitness and emotion. An introduction to neurology and psychopharmacology, concentrating on emotionality and behaviour. Breed-specific behaviour – symptoms of clinical problems, potential diagnoses and the need for veterinary referral.
Unit Five: The other end of the lead and case histories. Real-life behaviour cases, exploring common and complex behavioural problems.
Special Study: A research based project of the student’s choice.
